Round Tops

This morning at Lake Merritt. There are two “round tops” in this photo: the turtle’s shell, and the distinctive peak in Sibley Volcanic Regional Preserve called Round Top, which is visible in the background.

I love this view, from turtle to volcano!

I would encourage everyone to check out the reverse view, from Sibley.

It’s the short-lived emerald green season up there.

    Love that shadow!

Bravo! How big is the closer round top?

Dave, which of those two round tops is older? Any guess?

wordnerd: Pet-sized. If you extended the shell into a sphere, it would probably be about the size of a soccer ball—maybe even a size 4 or size 3 soccer ball.

Ruth: Is this a trick question? The geological Round Top is much, much older than this particular turtle, but turtles as a species are much, much older than this particular geological feature.

I can’t believe you saw a turtle at Lake Merrit. All I ever see are geese, ducks, and bird poop.
