I've always known it as simply "the first bench." I and other dog walkers or runners would use it as a benchmark (ba-dump-buh) to tell each other how far we had gone from Skyline Gate until we turned around (the "second bench," as you probably know, is another mile or two down the trail, making for more of a workout). Then sometime in the past few years they added a new bench between Skyline Gate and this bench, introducing all sorts of confusion into the terminology. Sadly, I don't get up to the hills as often as I used to, now that I don't have a car.

This is what my family calls "The Cracker Bench" along East Ridge Trail. We call it that because long ago when the girls had very short legs, they'd run out of steam at this point in our Sunday walk; and so we'd sit on this bench and eat a snack. It does have an amazing view which miraculously skips past the houses you would expect to see. When there's snow around Mt. Hamilton, near San Jose, on a clear day in winter, you can see it from this point. I guess the bench needs a little work at present!

This is sort of spooky because two cones have shown up on the front lawn of our building this week one plain and one striped.I have no idea where they came from as there was no construction in the neighborhood.I do love the fact that Oakland sits next to some beautiful rustic terrain.Tilden and Redwood parks are beautiful and the drive along the spine into Berkeley is amazing considering the urban area below.

For those who, like me, enjoy all kinds of nature photography it is pretty irrelevant that this photo is just an attempt that actually didn't quite succeed.

Keep them coming!

Redwood---East Ridge Trail, looking SSE. Photo didn't really come out as I'd hoped, but it was worth a try, and the attempt seemed worth posting anyway.
