I heard that employment numbers in California are slightly better. Did I hear that right?
December 25th, 2009 at 7:10 amNot exactly. The unemployment rate fell, but employment numbers fell too. The unemployment rate fell because people either gave up and stopped looking for work, or else moved to other states where they thought they might find more opportunities. So technically California’s unemployment rate fell from 12.5% to 12.3% in November, but the number of jobs here also fell by about 10,000. Merry Christmas, indeed!
That said, my sense is that a lot of people are less anxious about money than they were six months ago, so maybe they’re spending more, and we’ll actually start adding jobs again.
