Walmart on the March

I feel like I’ve seen this in different form somewhere before, but this is a cool visualization of the uncool spread of Walmart across the United States, from FlowingData. Store count is in upper left, year is in lower right.

I’ve been riding right past Oakland’s very own Walmart this week on my commute. (“Right past” in this case means that I can see it in the distance, across a parking lot, even though I ride up the same street that Walmart is on.)

Finally! Content worth reading from a voice I’ve been missing seeing in print. This blog is one of your better ideas, friend, along with the haircut.

Maybe that video will now start playing backwards?

Great chart, although the content is depressing.
Congratulations too on getting blurbed by Obama!

Fragmentaryevidence.com is #1 out of more than a million hits when googling [fragmentary evidence]. How could Barack possibly avoid it?

I confess that I like Wal Mart. Their fancy mixed nuts prices are consistently the lowest. I am willing to accept the collateral damage Wal Mart does to small businesses in the area for the low prices. The people that work at Wal Mart are not snooty either and their aisles are wide and uncluttered. But I still shop for food at groceries and hit places like JC Penny and Staples, so Wal Mart has yet to turn me into a shopping zombie.

avoice — Nice to know that we can always count on you to stand up for things like Wal Mart and gas guzzling cars. Someone out there has to keep defending the American way, right?
